Making Big Leaps in Life
Have you ever taken time out to notice how that as human beings we really like to do things big in life? We consistently work hard to come up with something that's not simply "the latest and greatest," but something that has to be the "best and biggest."
This is an interesting and mostly harmless human trait when applied to construction, or sports, or cooking... but when we start to use this same trait in our personal lives (especially as we set out to make changes in our daily lives) it can have a very negative effect.
How so you may ask?
Well, in my opinion many people think that if a simple change can be effective, then a bigger, more dramatic change must be even more effective!
At least that's what they think at first. Although after a bit of time considering the "big change," they start realising just how big that change actually is and then they soon discover all sorts of reasons why they shouldn't make any change at all!
It's an excuse shrouded inside a fake "effectiveness" issue: "If I can't make a really big change, then I should just wait until I can, that way I'm doing the most effective thing possible."
Now does that sound logical to you? I don't think so.
Just like a jet-pilot or a captain of a ship, as we speed through our own lives, we must make continuous minor adjustments to what we are doing to keep us on track.
These minor changes improve how we ultimately "perform" and help ensure that we "arrive" safely.
Big, sudden changes are the ones that are most dangerous, they tax our abilities and truly jeopardise our success.
Now please don’t get me wrong, I think it's extremely important to think big when planning your life and the scope of your life.
But I know personally that to make that big vision a reality takes lots of hard work and involves making many, many small changes to what you do, what you think, and what you believe on a daily basis.
If dreams are so important to us and to happiness, then why do so many people try to discourage us from following our dreams? Have you ever thought that maybe it's because they're afraid of seeing us succeed because that's a place they've never dared to go themselves? Maybe it's because they're just scared, scared of the happiness and success that comes from a person following a dream--and scared of the vulnerability that someone can open themselves up to when they truly follow their heart.
In all honesty, It shouldn't matter what other people say about your dreams. If you have a dream that makes you feel good you must follow it. Don't let the criticism spoil your dream. Hold onto it, and do all you can to make it come true. Hold onto your and notice each small step of success as you get there.
Sometimes we can be the most critical of our own dreams, by dismissing them or telling ourselves that they can't happen. When we let go of our dreams, we let go of a part of ourselves. And that can deaden us inside, to emotions and to hope. It can bring a lot of pain--because we're not letting ourselves reach for something that fulfils us. We're simply not letting ourselves try.
Not allowing ourselves to follow our dreams, or even to just dream, can eat away at us, and cause us to become bitter, angry, and self-loathing. Even when it's hard--even when it's scary and we feel like giving up and we can't think how we're going to get there--even then, there's something that feels right to us, deep in our souls, something that speaks to our hearts and makes us feel alive.
Dreams are vital to our well being, and we should all have them.
What can you do to bring yourself closer to your dreams? Follow them. Believe in them., nurture them and they can come true.
